An annual review of the Test rankings published by the International Cricket Council has allowed Pakistan to take England's second spot in the ladder. The teams begin a Test series on Thursday at Lord's with Pakistan on a seven-point lead over their hosts and some 10 points behind Australia.
The ICC has knocked out results in the year to 1 August 2003 when Pakistan lost two significant series.
A series win for England over Pakistan will allow them to reclaim second spot.
The ICC player rankings are unchanged since they were last updated on 4 July.
