West Indies charge halted by rain
Third Test, St Kitts, day two (tea): West Indies 420-5 v India

Daren Ganga and Ramnaresh Sarwan
Ganga and Sarwan made the most of a benign pitch

Daren Ganga and Ramnaresh Sarwan hit centuries as West Indies built a big total in the third Test against India.

The home side had reached 420-5 by tea, when heavy rain in St Kitts forced the umpires to call off the day's play.

Ganga was bowled for 136 and Guyanese star Sarwan fell lbw for 116 as, having been 346-1, West Indies conceded some of their advantage.

Both Brian Lara and Dwayne Bravo were out cheaply, while Munaf Patel took three of the wickets in the innings.

Play started early at Warner Park to make up for the three hours lost on the opening morning after heavy rain.

Ganga seemed to have discovered the fluency he lacked in the first part of his innings as he collected early boundaries off Patel and Anil Kumble.

He eventually reached his third Test hundred - and his first since April 2003 - when he rocked onto the back foot and cracked a ball from Patel away between cover and point for his 11th boundary.

It took him 249 balls in total and the extent of his struggle on the first day was underlined when Sarwan brought up his hundred from only 132 deliveries.

There was an astonishing over from Patel which saw Sarwan advance from 75 to 99 by hitting six fours, one of them off a no-ball, and the century arrived in the next over with a single tucked away to mid-wicket off Sri Sreesanth.

Finally, two wickets fell to Patel, ending a stand of 203.

Ganga was bowled off an inside edge before Lara was trapped by a delivery that straightened a fraction and appeared to be going on to hit off-stump.

While Shiv Chanderpaul ground out an unbeaten 24 at one end, Sarwan's innings was finally ended when he played across the line to Sri Sreesanth.

Bravo fell to a Mahendra Dhoni catch off Harbhajan Singh.
