Lara pleads for bowling firepower
Tino Best and Jermaine Lawson
Best and Lawson have the genuine pace that Lara is looking for
Captain Brian Lara has urged the West Indies selectors to give him a pace bowling line-up to trouble India.

The touring batsmen dominated the drawn first two Tests and Lara says the hosts are desperately missing genuine pacemen like Tino Best and Jermaine Lawson.

"I need that fast bowler who makes the opposition uncomfortable, especially if the pitch is in his favour," he said.

"I've spoken to the selectors and I feel it's unfortunate I'm getting negative feedback because of that."

The 37-year-old, who returned for a third spell as skipper in April, is unhappy that the selectors cannot understand his reasons for demanding out-and-out quick bowlers.

I want somebody bowling at 90mph-plus

Coach Bennett King and former Test players Joey Carew, Gordon Greenidge and Clyde Butts decide the make-up of the Windies squad.

Unlike his previous two captaincy stints, Lara does not have a vote but feels the selectors should heed his pleas.

"I think as captain of the team, they must have some sort of trust in that person," Lara argued.

"We've got guys with lesser pace who can move the ball around like Corey Collymore, Pedro Collins, Jerome Taylor and Ian Bradshaw, but I feel it's necessary to have that genuine fast bowler for the remainder of this series.

"I want somebody bowling at 90mph-plus. Fidel Edwards got injured but we have a couple of guys in Tino Best and Jermaine Lawson."

It's time for India to worry about our fast bowlers

Brian Lara

The Indians racked up 521-6 in Antigua and 588-8 in St Lucia and Lara wants "true" pitches in St Kitts and Jamaica to give his side a chance of winning the series.

"I'm not asking for anything untoward which is going to raise eyebrows," he added. "You speak to the Indians and they'll tell you if you produce something with a bit of grass they will be found wanting.

"We played England here in 2004 and all the pitches leading up to Antigua favoured fast bowlers.

"England had guys who enjoyed the conditions and we were 3-0 down before we knew it.

"It's time for India to start worrying about our fast bowlers."
