Symonds hundred sinks Bangladesh
One-day international, Fatullah: Australia 250-5 (50 overs) beat Bangladesh 183 (48 overs) by 67 runs

Andrew Symonds hit his fifth one-day century for Australia as they beat Bangladesh by 67 runs to take a 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

Symonds and Michael Clarke (54) rescued the tourists with a partnership of 140 for the fourth wicket after Mashrafe bin Mortaza had reduced them to 65-3.

They eventually totalled 250-5, with Symonds unbeaten on 103.

Bangladesh slumped to 8-3 in reply and despite Habibul Bashar's 70 were bowled out for 183, Brad Hogg taking 3-34.

Australia went into the game at Fatullah with an unchanged side and opted to bat first after winning the toss, having beaten Bangladesh by four wickets in the series opener last Sunday.

The home side, by contrast, made three changes as Alok Kapali, Javed Omar and Shahadat Hossain replaced Mohammad Ashraful, Aftab Ahmed and Syed Rasel.

They were under pressure at the outset as Adam Gilchrist and Simon Katich made an aggressive start for Australia, putting on 55 for the first wicket.

But Mortaza pegged them back with wickets in three successive overs, trapping Gilchrist lbw for 32, bowling Aussie skipper Ricky Ponting for five and then having Katich caught by Shahriar Nafees for 26.

Symonds and Clarke focused initially on halting the slide after coming together in the 13th over, with Clarke in particular happy to work the ball into the gaps and look for ones and twos.

After 30 overs, Australia were only 120-3 but Symonds opened his shoulders for two boundaries off Kapali as he went past 50 and having got his eye in he launched Rajin Saleh's off-spin over the ropes twice in the space of three deliveries.

Clarke's half century arrived off 86 balls with a single to fine-leg but he departed in the 45th over when he tried to strike a ball from Mohammad Rafique over cover but failed to clear Kapali.

Brett Lee

Mike Hussey came out to replace him and quickly picked up two boundaries through mid-wicket off Mortaza, who went off with a muscle strain after sending down the first ball of the final over.

Abdur Razzak took over and Symonds pulled him down to long-on to reach his hundred before the innings came to an end with Hussey bowled for 18 as he tried to swing the ball away to leg.

Any hopes Bangladesh had of mounting a serious bid for victory were soon dashed as Brett Lee trapped Shahriar Nafees lbw with the second ball of the innings.

Saleh then edged Nathan Bracken behind for a duck and Tushar Imran got an inside edge onto his stumps for two to leave the hosts on 8-3.

Omar and Bashar added 62 for the fourth wicket before Omar got a leading edge off Hussey and was caught by Lee at mid-on for 34, and Khaled Mashud then helped Bashar put on 76 in 20 overs.

Both then fell to the left-arm spin of Clarke, Mashud bowled attempting a reverse sweep for 36 and Bashar caught in the deep by Hussey after a 114-ball innings, which featured six boundaries.

It was then just a question of how long Bangladesh would last and there were still two overs to go when Hogg bowled Razzak to end the match.

"If we had won the toss and batted first, we could have won the game. But obviously we can't depend on the toss," said Bashar.

"Hopefully, we will come back strongly in the last game."
