 Azharuddin played because of a loophole in regulations |
Disgraced former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin returned to high-profile cricket on Sunday, hitting 82 for India Seniors against Pakistan in Karachi. A loophole in regulations meant he could play in this event despite a life ban for match-fixing involvement.
Pakistan Cricket Board boss Shaharyar Khan watched the match and handed the man of the match award to Azharuddin.
All-rounder Manoj Prabhakar played after serving a five-year ban but Pakistan's Salim Malik was barred.
"Azharuddin is banned from Test and first-class cricket. Veterans' cricket does not fall under any of these two categories," said Chetan Chauhan of the Board for Veteran Cricket in India
"Prabhakar's five-year ban is over. Both are eligible to play,
"Salim Malik's case is different. The Justice Qayyum Commission has banned him from all forms of cricket. So he is not eligible to play veterans' cricket."
