Lehmann is still a top batsman at domestic level |
Former Australia batsman Darren Lehmann has again declared an interest in the job of selecting the national team. There is a vacancy on the four-man panel following chief selector Trevor Hohns's decision to step down.
Lehmann, Dean Jones and former Surrey coach Steve Rixon have been suggested as possible replacements.
But Lehmann is determined to continue his career at state level, a factor which counted against him when his name was first put forward last year.
On that occasion, former fast bowler Merv Hughes was appointed to join Hohns, David Boon and Andrew Hilditch on the selection panel.
Lehmann believes, however, that continuing to play gives him a unique view of potential members of the Test and one-day international squads.
"I think Cricket Australia should show forward thinking and this time, when it comes up, change their attitude towards the idea," the 36-year-old said.
Another potential barrier to Lehmann is that South Australia already has a representative among the selectors in Hilditch.
The same difficulty would apply to Jones because of fellow Victorian Hughes.
There is no such obstacle in the path of Rixon, who gained extensive coaching experience with New South Wales and the New Zealand national team before his stint in England at The Oval.
Commenting on his chances of becoming a selector, Rixon said: "It's something I'd like to do. I have spoken to a few people about it and had a positive response."
Both he and Lehmann paid tribute to Hohns, who was in charge of tghe selection team for a decade.
"He did a great job in his tenure. He oversaw two World Cup wins and covered a lot of success," said Lehmann, who is about to spend the summer with English county side Yorkshire.
