First Test, Auckland, day five: New Zealand 275 & 272 beat West Indies 257 & 263 by 27 runs
Shane Bond was the Man of the Match |
New Zealand bowled out the West Indies for 263 on the final day of the first Test in Auckland to win by 27 runs. After a late batting collapse on day four, the tourists began the final day on 246-8, needing 45 runs for victory with just two wickets in hand.
But with just one run added, Ian Bradshaw was caught off Daniel Vettori and Shane Bond wrapped up a home win by bowling Jerome Taylor to end on 5-69.
It was the 14th defeat in 16 Tests for West Indies.
Bond later claimed a change of ball on the fourth day after West Indies opener Chris Gayle hit a six was a key to the change of fortunes.
"The turning point was Chris whacking the ball up on the roof and we got a new ball and it reversed a few overs later and we exploited it well, we never gave up and we got the result," said Bond
The final day's action lasted just eight and a half overs.
Bradshaw picked up a single off Bond to take his score to 10 and put himself on strike against Vettori's left-arm spin.
After safely negotiating the New Zealand vice-captain's opening delivery, he went forward to the second but got an inside edge onto his pad and Stephen Fleming made no mistake with the catch.
Taylor guided a ball from Bond to the third man boundary but after that he and last man Fidel Edwards were only able to advance the score in ones.
And the end came when Taylor shaped to cut Bond and only succeeded in draggining it down onto his stumps, giving the paceman figures of 5-69.
West Indies must now try to regroup before the second Test in Wellington, which starts on Friday.
