Ntini is congratulated by his South African team-mates |
Makhaya Ntini hailed the moment he became only the third South African to take 200 one-day wickets and spark a record 196-run defeat of Australia. The fast bowler picked up six for 22 as the world champions, chasing 290, were skittled out for 93 in Cape Town.
"I'll never forget today," said Ntini, after emulating the achievements of Allan Donald and Shaun Pollock.
"I took my 200th Test wicket at Newlands and now I've got my 200th one-day wicket here."
Ntini, 28, who started Friday's match on 196 wickets, quit the Proteas tour to Australia earlier this year because of a leg injury.
And he added: "I'm still looking forward to getting back to 100% fitness, but this moment is like a dream come true".
South Africa captain Graeme Smith admitted he was surprised by the margin of victory but was convinced his side always had the ability to beat Australia so convincingly.
"We knew what we were capable of," said Smith, whose side lead the five-match series 2-0.
"This is basically the team that went 20 games unbeaten to get us to the number two ranking in the world.
"We have tried one or two different combinations and this performance was superb."
Smith urged his side to build on their remarkable victory heading into Sunday's third one-dayer in Port Elizabeth.
"The boys are confident but the feet are still firmly on the ground," said Smith.
"We love winning and we love success but we know Sunday is important for the series and we want to go to Port Elizabeth and perform well."
Adam Gilchrist, captaining Australia in the absence of the injured Ricky Ponting, offered no excuses after his team's worst ever one-day defeat by South Africa.
It eclipsed their previous worst one-day defeat, a 109-run reversal in Bloemfontein in 1996-97.
"South Africa outplayed us today," said Gilchrist. "Hats off to the way Makhaya and Shaun (Pollock) bowled for them at the start.
"It was a great display of bowling but there was some poor shot selection by us at times.
"Makhaya's a treasure to have in their side. You really notice it when he's not there as was shown in the one-day series in Australia."
Despite the defeat, Gilchrist insists his side can bounce back in Port Elizabeth on Sunday.
"It's going to be very difficult but there is a great belief in this side," he said.
