Michael Vaughan says England are still on course for an exciting one-day finale despite their seven wicket loss to Australia at Lord's.

The NatWest Challenge is split 1-1 with the last game at The Oval on Tuesday.

"We just need to turn up on Tuesday with the same intensity we have had over the last few weeks," he said.

"We're competing against the world champions and we're competing very well. We just need to compete one more time and we may win a trophy."

It was a view shared by his Aussie counterpart Ricky Ponting, who helped his side recover from Thursday's nine-wicket defeat with a century at the home of cricket.

"It's been a commanding win, but a couple of days ago it was England," said Ponting.

"It's like that this series. You couldn't get a better finale."

Vaughan admitted the start of each innings was crucial, saying: "They put us under pressure with the ball early on and at 78-4 after 24 overs we weren't looking like getting any total.

"At 223 I thought we were competitive but we were always going to have to get early wickets."

He praised Ponting's century, although he added: "I'm sure he'll agree the wicket got easier to bat on throughout the day but it's not an excuse."

Brett Lee was named man of the match after taking 5-41, but was quick to praise the whole team after the seven-wicket win.

"The guys played fantastic, we bowled in partnerships and for Ricky to get a hundred it was a fantastic day," said Lee.
