Pakistan opening gap over India
Third Test, Karachi, day two (stumps):
Pakistan 245 & 173-2 v India 238

Pakistan celebrate
Pakistan bowled India out for 238 just before tea

Pakistan's new opening pair shared a century stand on day two to open up a gap over India in the third Test.

Both Salman Butt (53) and Imran Farhat (57) fell late on but the hosts took a lead of 180 after Mohammad Yousuf and Younis Khan put on an unbroken 51.

Mohammad Asif finished with 4-78 as India were bowled out for 238 earlier.

Sourav Ganguly (34) and Yuvraj Singh (45) were part of a morning collapse but Irfan Pathan (40) shared a 56-run ninth-wicket stand with Zaheer Khan.

India had begun the day 74-4 with Ganguly, recalled after missing the second match, and Yuvraj progressing easily against the first-choice attack.

Pace spearhead Shoaib Akhtar struggled for control, regularly erring down leg side.

They added a rapid 62 runs off 12 overs in the first hour with some impressive strokes and stretched their partnership to 81 off 106 balls.

But medium-pacer Abdul Razzaq's arrival saw Ganguly dismissed off a hook

Asif beat the edge of the bat on a number of occasions with his brilliant line and length on a seamers' wicket and was finally rewarded when he trapped Yuvraj lbw.

Razzaq had Mahendra Dhoni caught behind but saw Pathan and Anil Kumble both dropped just before lunch.

Pathan made a patient start before cutting loose, with six fours and a six off Shoaib.

Zaheer made 21 in support as Pakistan dropped at least four catches.

Younis, leading the side in absence of the injured Inzamam-ul-Haq, floored a chest high catch before Pathan had scored.

And Asif misjudged a head high catch at the boundary when left-hander Pathan was on six.

India's resistance was finally quelled just before tea, when Pathan got a leading edge off spinner Shahid Afridi to long-on.

Pakistan began the match by crashing to 37-6, but their top order endured no such trouble at the second attempt.

Butt and Farhat, back in the side for Shoaib Malik, hit 10 boundaries each, passing 50 within minutes but then falling in the space of three overs.

Ganguly made the breakthough, swinging a delivery into left-hander Butt to trap him leg-before.

And Farhat was guilty of a top-edged hook off Pathan, which Sachin Tendulkar held onto a mid-on.

Tendulkar left the field with bruising around his jaw after a collision with Yousuf, who was dashing to make his ground late in the day.

But Yousuf looked otherwise untroubled on his way to 30 not out, becoming the fifth Pakistani to pass 5,000 Test runs.

Younis made his way to an unbeaten 25 with five boundaries.

India coach Greg Chappell defended his seam bowlers after they appeared tired as the day progressed.

"Three Test matches in a row is tough on the bowlers, particular in these conditions and it's fair to say a few of them are tired," he said.

"The boys tried hard but it's a very good batting wicket now and the Pakistanis batted well."
