Former umpire David Shepherd has been given honorary life membership of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). Shepherd retired last season after standing in 92 Tests and 172 one-day internationals, including the 1996, 1999 and 2003 World Cup finals.
"I am honoured and delighted. It has capped a truly memorable year for me.
"Lord's is a wonderful ground and I look forward to returning there," said the ex-Gloucestershire batsman who became a first-class umpire in 1981.
MCC secretary and chief executive Roger Knight added: "It is fitting that the MCC, the guardian of the laws of the game, should recognise David's immense contribution to cricket.
"No one could have done more to uphold the laws and spirit of cricket than "Shep", whose performance and consistency were of the highest class."
Other honorary life members include Sir Garfield Sobers, Sunil Gavaskar, Ian Botham and Henry Olonga, and former umpire Dickie Bird.
