McGrath was reported by umpires Aleem Dar and Billy Bowden |
Australia fast bowler Glenn McGrath has been given an official reprimand for using obscene language during the third and final Test against South Africa. The 35-year-old attended a disciplinary hearing after Thursday's play in Sydney following an incident in the 13th over of the tourists' second innings.
McGrath has been fined four times in his 119-Test career and suspended once.
Brett Lee, McGrath's new ball partner, was reprimanded and cautioned for dissent earlier in the third Test.
McGrath was reported to match referee Chris Broad by umpires Billy Bowden and Aleem Dar after his outburst over a dropped catch off his bowling.
He was found guilty by Broad of "using language that is obscene, offensive or insulting and/or the making of an obscene gesture".
A level one offence under the International Cricket Council (ICC) code of conduct, it could have cost McGrath 50% of his match fee, but Broad opted to hand out the minimum punishment.
The ICC warned both teams about their behaviour before the series began but Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland has defended the players.
"This has been a fiercely contested series but let's face it, we've been looking for that for a number of years," he said,
"So I don't think we should be too disappointed at players going very hard at each other on the field."
