Australia relish World XI battle
Ricky Ponting
Ponting's Australia will take on a World XI
Australia coach John Buchanan says his team are relishing taking on the best cricketers in world.

Australia will compete against an ICC World XI in three one-day internationals and one six-day Test in Melbourne and Sydney in October.

Buchanan said: "Many of the players have a great record against Australia and I am very excited about the prospect of them all in one team.

"Australia is certainly going to have to play at its best."

Buchanan said Australia would not want to surrender their unbeaten run in both forms of the game.

I think the standard of cricket we will see has the potential to be better than anything we have seen in Australia

"I am confident that the calibre of our guys is such that they will relish the opportunity to display their abilities against the best the world has to offer," Buchanan said.

"I think the standard of cricket and competition that we will see in the Super Series has the potential to be better than anything we have seen in Australia."

Michael Vaughan is one of seven England players named in either the Test or one-day squads.

So far 30 players have been named but that will be reduced to 20 then 13 over the course of the summer.

The England captain said: "It's a great achievement to be selected in the squad of 30 and it's fantastic to see seven English players involved in the Test and ODI squads.

"It's a great incentive to try and get into the squad of 20 and then into the final 13. I'll be trying to have a good summer against the Aussies to try and push myself into that final 13."

At the age of 34, Darren Gough has been selected for the one-day squad.

The Essex pace bowler said: "It's not bad for someone my age though it's a pity we've had to wait so long for these games to happen!

"It's nice to be selected and is a big boost to my career - this shows I still have a lot to offer. "

And Bangladesh coach Dav Whatmore was surprised fast bowler highly-rated fast bowler Mashrafee Mortaza did not rate a place in the 30.

"I may be biased but the boy can play. He has real competitiveness and a sense of self-belief," he said.
