Second Test, Wellington, day one (stumps):
New Zealand 52-0 v Sri Lanka 211

Martin took all five Sri Lankan wickets before lunch
New Zealand's Chris Martin took six wickets as Sri Lanka were reduced to 211 all out on day one of the second Test at Basin Reserve in Wellington.

Sri Lanka slumped to 65-5 after being put in to bat, with Martin taking all five wickets of the morning session.

Martin and James Franklin struck after lunch before Thilan Samaraweera (73) and Upul Chandana (41) responded, but Nathan Astle took three late wickets.

Craig Cumming and James Marshall took New Zealand on to 52-0 at stumps.

Cumming was 14 not out and Marshall was unbeaten on 24 when bad light brought an early close.

Home captain Stephen Fleming's decision to field after winning the toss paid immediate dividends as fast bowler Martin ripped through Sri Lanka's top order.

He took his first five wickets before lunch for just 29 runs.

Sanath Jayasuriya was the only batsman for the visitors to form any sort of resistance in that session, scoring 22.

It took Martin just three balls to account for his first victim, having captain Marvan Atapattu caught at slip by Lou Vincent.

Sri Lanka then settled, moving on to 34-1 before Martin wreaked further havoc.

He had Kumar Sangakkara (16) caught at slip by Marshall, Mahela Jayawardene lbw for one, Jayasuriya caught by Nathan Astle and Tillakaratne Dilshan (nine) caught by wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum.

Shantha Kalavitigoda became Martin's sixth victim after lunch as he edged the ball to Vincent, before Franklin claimed his sole victim, Chaminda Vaas, for five.

Vaas' departure saw something of a Sri Lankan fightback as Samaraweera and Chandana eked out the runs before tea.

But then Astle came into the attack, taking the wickets of Chandana, Samaraweera and Farveez Maharoof to end with figures of 3-35.

New Zealand: Stephen Fleming (Capt), Craig Cumming, James Marshall, Hamish Marshall, Nathan Astle, Lou Vincent, Brendon McCullum, Kyle Mills, Paul Wiseman, James Franklin, Chris Martin.
