Second Test, Wellington, day four (stumps):
Australia 570-8 v New Zealand 244
Fast bowler Michael Kasprowicz took 3-42 |
New Zealand were all out for 244 in their first innings and trail Australia by 326 runs after a rain-disrupted fourth day of the second Test.
Lou Vincent top scored in Wellington with 63 and Daniel Vettori was the last man out just before tea for 45.
Michael Kasprowicz was the pick of the Australian bowlers with 3-42, while Shane Warne took 3-69.
The morning and final sessions were washed out but the tourists will still be confident of securing victory.
The home side began the day on 122-4, and Vincent and nightwatchman James Franklin made a bright start, adding 58 for the sixth wicket.
Franklin was dismissed for 26 when Kasprowicz found some reverse swing and the edge of the bat.
After making a patient 63 off 164 balls, Vincent also nicked Kasprowicz behind to give the Queensland bowler his 99th Test wicket.
Kiwi wicket-keeper Brendon McCullum spooned a catch off Warne to Michael Clarke at cover before the leg-spinner bowled Craig McMillan for 20.
Gillespie bowled Iain O'Brien with a yorker and Vettori, who had frustrated the tourists by smashing eight boundaries in his 45 off 63 deliveries, was caught on the boundary off Warne.
Auistralian skipper Ricky Ponting enforced the follow-on but rain came to New Zealand's rescue after tea - and they will need more of it on Tuesday to avoid going 2-0 down in the three-match series.
