 | The pitch is not a paradise for bowlers - if you bat with caution you can score big |
Pakistan vice-captain Younis Khan said the second Test in Calcutta was in a "50-50 situation" after he and Yousuf Youhana hit unbeaten centuries. The tourists reached 273-2 at the end of the second day's play in reply to India's 407 all out.
"Our plan was to stay at the wicket and maintain 3-4 runs an over. If you see our scoring pattern, 75% of our runs came in singles.
"It's just that we exploited the gaps in the field," Younis said.
"If we can play till tea tomorrow and get a lead of 150-200, then India will be under pressure."
Younis batted for over four hours, faced 167 balls and hit 14 fours in his 108 not out - his seventh Test century in all but his first against India.
"I had a bad match in Mohali where I didn't score runs and dropped catches, but there was no pressure as such.
"I went in with a positive frame of mind and managed to play my strokes well," the 27-year-old said.
Pakistan skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq praised the character shown by Younis and Youhana, who finished the day on 101,
Their unbroken stand of 203 was a third wicket record for a Pakistan pair in India, beating the 155 shared by Shoaib Mohammed and Javed Miandad at Madras in 1987.
Inzamam urged his team not to waste the opportunity to post a big total.
"In Melbourne last year against Australia, we were bowled out for under 350 after being 250-3 at one stage," he said.
"I only have half a smile on my face. I will smile broadly if we take a match-winning lead. It won't be easy to bat on this pitch on the last two days."
