Strauss will be back in action against Bangladesh in May |
England will have to be at 100% this summer to win the Ashes series against Australia, according to Andrew Strauss. Opening batsman Strauss will have a key role to play in blunting Australia's new ball attack.
"There's still a long way for me to go individually, and us collectively as a team as well," he said.
"We've got to play to our potential, play at 100%, get all our players fit and ready to go and not put ourselves under too much pressure."
Strauss, who made 656 runs at an average of 72.8 in the Test series in South Africa, continued: "We've just got to go out and enjoy it and hopefully we'll put on a good show [against Australia]."
His form was less impressive in the one-dayers which, from an England point of view, were dominated by Kevin Pietersen.
And Strauss believes Pietersen can make the necessary adjustments to shine in Test cricket, if selected this summer.
"I've played against him quite a lot in four-day cricket and he doesn't play quite as aggressively, he's able to adapt his game.
"But certainly if you've got those shots in your armoury, against good bowlers it's pretty good if you can take them on.
"Andrew Flintoff's done that in the past and there's no reason why Kevin can't do it," Strauss added.
One leading bookmaker has Pietersen at 1/3 to play against Australia, 9/4 to make the team for the first Test and 16/1 to be the leading scorer in the series.
Marcus Trescothick, meanwhile, agreed with Strauss' assessment of the scale of challenge presented by England's oldest rivals.
"We've beaten South Africa but how much we have to improve before we face Australia is the million-dollar question," he said.
"We have some time off now to reflect, to improve, get fit and begin work for the summer. We'll be in good shape and ready to go by the time the series arrives."
