England coach Duncan Fletcher has called on the side's remaining batsmen to be patient ahead of the final day of the third Test. The tourists resume at 0830 GMT on Thursday on 151-5, 349 runs behind South Africa's lead.
But Fletcher said: "We've got (Graham) Thorpe there and (Geraint) Jones there. A hard fight is needed. But cricket is a strange game - you never know.
"I think the blokes must realise the patience that is required."
England suffered another poor batting display on Wednesday.
Marcus Trescothick lost his wicket off the second ball of the innings, while Robert Key and Michael Vaughan got out following rash shots.
And Fletcher said: "It's not really an easy wicket to bat on. You think it is okay, and suddenly the ball bounces a little bit. You can get lured into a false sense of security.
"You've got to sit there and realise the errors that are occurring and maybe address those. Somewhere along the line you're going to have a bad game."
Fletcher, however, admitted the form of captain Vaughan was "a concern to a degree because he's not got any runs".
"But he seemed quite happy," said Fletcher after Vaughan's brief knock of 20. "It was unfortunate the way he got out. He seems pretty confident of getting back on track."
