Cautious Vaughan plays down win
Michael Vaughan
England skipper Michael Vaughan was quick to play down the significance of England's emphatic victory over Ashes rivals Australia in a Twenty20 game.

The hosts prevailed by 100 runs at The Rose Bowl in front of a lively crowd.

"In my first game of Twenty20, I lasted only one ball, but the team played some good cricket," said a modest Vaughan.

"It is a bit of a lottery - you need luck and we got it and the crowd was great, but I don't think it will have any impact on the five-day format."

Australia captain Ricky Ponting paid tribute to England after a nightmare start to his tour included a duck with the bat.

"There was not much good stuff from us," Ponting said. "England played very well and bowled exceptionally."

On the hat-trick ball, I went for a short one because I thought everyone would be expecting a yorker

"We knew we had to hit out chasing that sort of total and everything we hit went straight to a fielder.

"It was a good fun game and the spectators enjoyed it. It wasn't much fun for us, though."

Veteran England fast bowler Darren Gough revelled in the occasion, claiming the wickets of openers Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden in consecutive balls but missing out on a hat-trick.

"There was a brilliant atmosphere and all the lads were really up for it," said Gough.

"To be honest, it was just great to play against Australia again - I never thought it would happen

"On the hat-trick ball, I went for a short one because I thought everyone would be expecting a yorker."

Like his captain, Gough was careful to be moderate in his criticism of the visiting Australians.

"They're a great side and they normally come hard from day one," he said.

"Australia will be coming hard again - it's a long summer and hopefully I'll keep bowling the way I have been."
