Davison made his name at the 2003 World Cup |
Canadian captain John Davison produced a dominant all-round display on day one of their ICC Intercontinental Cup game against the USA in Florida. Davison, playing his first game for Canada since last year's World Cup, hit 84 in a Canadian total of 221 all out.
The USA crumbled to 110-8 at the close in reply as Davison returned figures of 6-49 from 11 overs of off-spin.
Canada and the USA are cricket's oldest rivals, having first played each other in New York 160 years ago.
The Intercontinental Cup involves 12 teams, divided into four groups of three, playing a series of three-day matches with the winners progressing to the semi-finals in the United Arab Emirates in November.
The USA went into the game in confident mood, having won the Six Nations Challenge event earlier this year to earn a place in the Champions Trophy, which will see them take on Australia and New Zealand.
But their shortcomings in the longer form of the game were exposed as Davison, who plays professionally for South Australia, put Canada in a strong position.
He shared a sixth-wicket stand of 88 with Hani Dhillon, who marked his debut with 69, but 5-78 by spinner Nasir Javed enabled the USA to retain some control with the ball.
Their batting was a different story and they collapsed after a useful second wicket stand between Leon Romero (33) and skipper Richard Staple (30).
Ajaz Ali was 24 not out at the close.
