Zimbabwe rebels to tour UK

Zimbabwe's rebel cricketers are to tour England next month to play friendly matches against club sides.

Many of the 15, who boycotted the side in protest at captain Heath Streak's sacking will join the Red Lions team.

Matches have been confirmed against celebrity side Lashings and a Zimbabwe XI at Wimbledon CC on 14 and 16 July.

"It is a purely social tour - not a political statement, more a stress-reliever for the guys," batsman Stuart Carlisle told BBC Sport.

Zimbabwe's Test status is currently suspended and the International Cricket Council will discuss the country's future at a meeting this week.

The group are currently fund-raising in Zimbabwe to cover the costs of the trip.

There is still a slight possibility that some of the guys could play international cricket again

Carlisle, another former Test captain, said they still hold out hopes of a major change in the Zimbabwe Cricket Union to allow their return.

"[The tour] allows us to get out and do something effective while we wait on the ICC and the ZCU," he said.

"There is still a slight possibility that some of the guys could play international cricket again.

"But at the moment none of the rebels will go back unless there is a major change in the ZCU."

Of the rebel group, the only player unlikely to make the trip is Sean Ervine, who has moved to Australia.

All-rounder Andy Blignaut, who has also signed a contract to play state cricket in Tasmania, is also yet to confirm his availability.

But the group hope Streak will be able to play as the dates do not clash with his county commitments for Warwickshire.

Lashings are likely to feature former international stars Richie Richardson, Mark Waugh and Courtney Walsh.

And the "Zimbabwe World XI" is expected to be made up of players already in the UK, including fast bowler Henry Olonga and batsman Murray Goodwin.

"We have had some good feedback from other sides so we could add more matches," Carlisle added.

However, the matches are likely to be festival matches against invitational sides rather that first-class counties.

Red Lions: Gary Brent, Stuart Carlisle, Charles Coventry, Gavin Ewing, Neil Ferreira, Grant Flower, Travis Friend, Raymond Price, Barney Rogers, Richard Sims, Heath Streak, Craig Wishart.
