Marvan Atapattu and Kumar Sangakkara both hit Test best scores as Sri Lanka piled on the runs against Zimbabwe in the second Test in Bulawayo. Atapattu hit 249, Sangakkara 270 and Mahela Jayawardene had time to reach three figures before the tourists declared on 713-3 just after tea.
It was only the 12th time a team had gone past 700 in a Test innings.
The hosts were left needing 485 just to make Sri Lanka bat again and at the close were 44-2.
Zimbabwe lost the wickets of opener Stuart Matsikenyeri for 14 and Mark Vermeulen for six , both to Nuwan Zoysa, as they struggled to stave off an innings defeat for the second time in a row.
One bright spot in their second innings was youngster Brendan Taylor smashing Muttiah Muralitharan for six.
Taylor was unbeaten on 19 at stumps, with Dion Ebrahim was three not out.
Sri Lanka had resumed play on 443-1 and got into their batting stride quickly to further punish the depleted Zimbabwe team.
But a momentary lapse of concentration saw Atapattu's demise after a sterling innings.
He hit a thick edge which was caught by wicket-keeper Tatenda Taibu off Elton Chigumbura's bowling.
In his second Test as captain, Atapattu notched his sixth double century and his third trip into three figures in as many matches.
It ended a 438-run partnership between Atapattu and Sangakkara, who was dismissed by Tinashe Panyangara after lunch.
The stand although impressive was still well short of topping the Sri Lankan second wicket record of 576, shared by Roshan Mahanama and Sanath Jayasuriya against India in 1997.
And Jayawardene managed to notch up his 11th Test century before the declaration was made.
Sri Lanka lead the two-match series 1-0 after winning by an innings and 240 runs in Harare.
