Kenyans depleted by strike
Steve Tikolo
Tikolo's frustrations are currently off the field not on
Kenya have named nine uncapped players in a 15-man squad for Friday's match with Namibia after eight existing squad members boycotted in a contract row.

Led by former skipper Steve Tikolo, the eight were unhappy they had not been offered proper deals by the board.

They added that they had no confidence in the management or coaching and refused to attend training, so were not considered for selection.

Hitesh Modi, one of five left from the Champions Trophy, was named as captain.

Tikolo was particularly severe on former Warwickshire batsman Andy Moles, the Kenyan coach.

"The calibre of coaching is not up to standard I'm sorry to say," he began, before criticising the board.

"It's an open secret that potential sponsors are not ready to invest in the game with the current officials still at the helm."

The players have made unrealistic demands
Kenyan board chairman, Sharad Ghai

The board countered the Intercontinental Cup match with the Namibians would not be affected.

"We will not succumb to threats and extortion because the game is bigger than individuals."

The contract row revolves around the length of deal offered, for two months, because negotiations with new sponsors were still ongoing.

"We need job security. We don't need to used for two months and thereafter we are dumped," Tikolo slammed.

Players claim the board threatened not to pay them money owed from the World Cup last year if they did not take part in the three-day match this week.

Kenyan board chairman Sharad Ghai added that $50,000 had been retained for taxation reasons.

"The players made unrealistic demands because of World Cup euphoria and we lost the companies who were to sponsor their contracts.

"Now they have to wait until we get new sponsors."

Kenya squad: Hitesh Modi (captain), Ravindu Shah, Lameck Onyango, David Okumu, Timothy Muange, Tanmy Mishra, Rashmi Kunverjee, Rageb Aga, Abeed Janmohamed, Brijal Patel, Malhar Patel, Kalpesh Patel, Amit Bhudia, Jadhavji Bhimji, Rajesh Bhudia, Mohsin Ali.
