South Africa captain Graeme Smith thanked his bowlers for putting the visitors back on top in the third Test against New Zealand.

The Kiwis were reduced to 128-5 after bowling out South Africa for 316 on day three in Wellington.

"The bowlers have been superb. We've built some serious pressure and we've got wickets at crucial times.

"I had different plans for the day but we failed with the bat and now things are evenly poised," Smith said.

Shaun Pollock and Nicky Boje took two wickets apiece for South Africa, with Andre Nel picking up the scalp of New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming.

New Zealand fast bowler Chris Martin earlier took 5-55 as South Africa lost their last seven wickets for 79 runs, collapsing from an overnight 237-2 to 316 all out.

Only Jacques Rudolph, who was left stranded on 93 not out, had any answer to Martin and Chris Cairns, who took four wickets.

"They were a wee bit on edge, I suppose, and that helps when you get an early wicket and the team gets behind you," Martin said.

"We put the willies up them a bit and they didn't like it."

New Zealand take a lead of 109 into the final morning with five wickets remaining.

South Africa must win the match to avoid their first Test series loss in New Zealand.
