England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff won the International Cricket Council world one-day player of the year prize at the inaugural awards ceremony. During the qualification period Flintoff played 12 matches, scored 551 runs and took 12 wickets at 20.50.
But the Lancastrian missed out on the Test and overall player of the year prizes, which were both won by India's Rahul Dravid.
Indian left-arm seamer Irfan Pathan won the emerging player of the year award.
Performances for the awards, nicknamed "cricket's Oscars", were assessed between August 2003 and July 2004.
Flintoff and England team-mate Steve Harmison failed to make it an England double when they missed out on the Test player of the year award to prolific Indian batsman Dravid, who averaged 95.46 during the year's Test cricket with 1,241 runs from nine matches.
"When you look at the names who have voted for this award it is a great honour," said Dravid, who also scooped the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for being the best player in both forms of the game.

Flintoff's week began with the birth of his first child, a daughter named Holly.
"She's doing fine. And now this week seems to be getting better," the 26-year-old said at the Alexandra Palace ceremony in London.
"I wouldn't have believed it if someone had said three years ago that I would be getting an award like this and beating players of this stature.
"I'm going through a purple patch in my life and my cricket, I'm just enjoying it at the moment.
"I've had some bad times when things have gone wrong for me but this makes up for those times."
Harmison did earn a place in the combined Test line-up alongside players such as Australians Shane Warne and Jason Gillespie and West Indian captain Brian Lara.
"It's been a fantastic year for the England team but this is a great personal honour for me as well.
"To be included in such company makes all the hard work I did before Christmas to get fitter worthwhile," said Harmison.
Australian Simon Taufel won the umpire of the year award.
