The International Cricket Council and the United States Cricket Association have joined forces to raise the game's profile in America. The ICC announced on Thursday it would work with the fledgling association to appoint a chief executive.
Part of the CEO's job would be to convince the world's top teams to take part in a one-day tournament there.
Proceeds would go towards developing cricket in a country dominated by baseball, football and basketball.
Malcolm Speed, chief executive of the ICC, said the plans were focused on promoting cricket as a successful niche sport.
"There is no suggestion that cricket is trying to take on the major American team sports in their own back yard," he said.
"There are already over 500 active cricket clubs in the USA and the aim of this project is to build on this solid foundation to help increase the reach of the sport."
Earlier this month, the US cricket team won the Six Nations Challenge in the United Arab Emirates to qualify for the ICC Champions Trophy in England in September.
West Indies are hosting the World Cup in three years' time and America could be chosen to stage some games.
