Martin had been in the wilderness for two years |
New Zealand coach John Bracewell paid tribute to Chris Martin after the lanky paceman claimed 10 wickets in a Test for the first time. Martin, who was recalled after a two-year absence, claimed his 10th wicket as South Africa were reduced to 277-6 in their second innings.
"He was recommended by his peers, really," said Bracewell.
"Many said he was particularly good at bowling to left-handers and South Africa has plenty of them."
Bracewell added: "He has backed up our faith with some fantastic bowling."
Martin was called into the squad for the second Test after an impressive domestic season for Canterbury and a good match for New Zealand A against Sri Lanka A last week.
He played 11 Tests after first being selected during the injury-hit tour by New Zealand to South Africa in 2000, last featuring two years ago against Pakistan.
"I've been working hard in the last two off-seasons and I've put on 10kg and cut down on my smoking," said Martin.
"I always hoped I hadn't been forgotten, but when it comes down to it, if you perform you'll always be noticed."
South African batsman Jacques Rudolph, who was 121 not out at stumps, was impressed by Martin's performance.
"He's one of those type of guys who keeps coming at you and you've always got to be in control and keep on concentrating. He's a very good bowler," said Rudolph.
"He swings the ball nicely across the left-handers like me and he bowled some reverse swing at the death there."
