Australia would take on a Rest of the World XI |
South Africa is attempting to host the inaugural International Cricket Council's Super Series tournament. The series has been pencilled in for September 2005, although the ICC still has to give the biennial competition the go-ahead.
It would see reigning World Cup and Test champions Australia playing three one-day internationals and a Test match against a Rest of the World XI.
ICC president Ehsan Mani is set to visit South Africa later this month.
And the Super Series is an item on the ICC's agenda at its executive board meeting in Auckland in New Zealand on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The United Cricket Board of South Africa's general council endorsed the host bid when it met in Johannesburg on Saturday.
The ICC already stages the Champions Trophy one-day tournament on a biennial basis, the next one being staged in England in September.
And fitting in a Super Series when there are already concerns about the amount of international cricket might prove difficult.
Rest of the World sides played 'Tests' in England and Australia in the early 1970s and took part in a Princess Diana memorial match at Lord's six years ago.
