Neil McKenzie warmed up for the Test series in New Zealand with 100 not out for South Africa against Central Districts in Napier.

The tourists made 286-5 declared and Andre Nel and David Terbrugge each took a wicket as the state side ended the first day on 36-2.

South Africa are looking for a big improvement in the Tests after losing the one-day series by a 5-1 margin.

Mark Boucher provided the main support for McKenzie with 58.

South Africa struggled at the start of the game as they were reduced to 90-4 despite 42 from Jacques Rudolph.

Veteran Gary Kirsten, who is two Tests away from reaching 100 caps, only managed four before he was lbw to Andrew Schwass.

But McKenzie and Boucher added 115 for the fifth wicket and Nicky Boje weighed in with an unbeaten 38 before the declaration came.

Central Districts were soon in trouble in reply as Terbrugge, who was added to the South African squad because of Shaun Pollock's groin injury, had Peter Ingram caught behind for three.

Opening partner Jamie How fell to Nel for 13, with Terbrugge taking the catch, but Test batsman Mathew Sinclair kept the tourists at bay and was 13 not out at the close.
