Black Caps gain upper hand
Second Test, Auckland, day two: South Africa 296; New Zealand 201-3 (close)

Martin fully justified his recall to New Zealand's Test side
Chris Martin and Scott Styris took the leading roles as New Zealand worked their way into a good position in the second Test against South Africa.

Seam bowler Martin achieved career best figures of 6-76 as the tourists were all out for 296 in Auckland.

New Zealand were 12-2 in reply but recovered to end day two on 201-3 with Styris unbeaten on 118.

Shaun Pollock dismissed Michael Papps to become South Africa's leading Test wicket-taker with 331 victims.

The tourists started the day in a comfortable position on 231-2, but Martin made the most of overcast conditions during the morning session.

He struck in the seventh over when Jacques Rudolph was caught at third slip for 17, beginning a collapse which saw South Africa slump to 246-6.

Jacob Oram spoiled Gary Kirsten's 100th Test by bowling him for one and Martin then picked up the prized wicket of Jacques Kallis, who was caught behind for 40.

Mark Boucher was next to go, caught by Craig McMillan off Martin for four and although Shaun Pollock hung around for a dozen overs, he was then bowled by Daryl Tuffey for 10.

The last three wickets went down for just seven runs after Neil McKenzie's 108-minute resistance was ended by Martin, who had him caught for 27.

His sixth success came two balls later when Makhaya Ntini edged to wicket-keeper Brendon McCullum and Oram ended the innings by trapping David Terbrugge lbw for a duck.

South Africa needed early wickets in response and Pollock wasted no time providing one with Papps caught by Nicky Boje for nought in the third over.

It took Pollock clear of former team-mate Allan Donald, who retired from Test cricket two years ago with a career total of 330 wickets.

New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming followed for four in the eight over, caught by Kallis off Ntini, but Styris and Mark Richardson steadied the innings by adding 125.

It was a third wicket record partnership for New Zealand against South Africa, beating the 94 by Matt Poore and Bert Sutcliffe in Cape Town 50 years ago.

They were finally separated when Richardson, on 45, slashed a ball from Kallis to Herschelle Gibbs.

But Styris continued to his third Test century off 121 balls and by the close had hit two sixes and 16 fours.

Craig McMillan was the other not out batsman on 31 when stumps were drawn.
