Murali's career in pictures

Muttiah Muralitharan claimed his 500th Test wicket for Sri Lanka before Australia hit back in the second Test.

The spinner bowled Michael Kasprowicz for a duck to pass the milestone on day one and ended with figures of 4-48 as Australia were bowled out for 120.

But Shane Warne replied with three wickets for Australia to take his overall Test total to 504.

Kasprowicz removed the top three Sri Lankan batsmen before the home side reached 92-7 at the close.

Australia's previous lowest total against Sri Lanka was the 140 they scored at Kandy in 1999, in a match they lost by six wickets.

After spin dominated the opening match of the series, pace bowling made an early impact on a lively pitch, with Nuwan Zoysa leading the charge.

Zoysa, playing in his first Test since 2002, broke through when Justin Langer padded away an inswinger and was lbw for three.

Ricky Ponting drove two boundaries off Zoysa but was then trapped lbw at the other end by left-armer Chaminda Vaas, despite taking a big stride forward.

And the pace bowler then bowled Darren Lehmann behind his legs on the stroke of lunch.

Muralitharan, cheered on by a stand of school children who had been bussed in by the cricket board, then ended Hayden's 99-ball resistance.

Zoysa broke up the spinner's haul when he had Andrew Symonds and Adam Gilchrist both caught in the slips in the same over.

Jason Gillespie was caught at slip off Muralitharan's leg break and Kasprowicz was bowled through the gate.

But Sri Lanka's delight after routing the Aussies soon evaporated as Kasprowicz dimissed Marva Atapattu for nine when he was caught behind by Gilchrist.

Sanath Jayasuriya soon followed when he was trapped lbw by Kasprowicz after scoring only one run.

The seamer then reduced Sri Lanka to 3-39 when Avishka Gunawardene went in similar fashion to Jayasuriya for 13.

Kumar Sangakkara was another top order batsman to fail when he was caught by Symonds off Jason Gillespie for five before Warne took centre stage.

Not to be outdone by his Sri Lankan counterpart, Warne then snapped up the wickets of Mahela Jayawardene, Hashan Tillakratne and Tillakaratne Dilshan to leave Sri Lanka 28 runs behind with thee wickets intact.
