Tait played for Australia against India during the winter |
Uncapped Shaun Tait will replace the injured Brett Lee on Australia's tour of Sri Lanka. Tait, 21, has played for Australia A and in January became the first bowler to take eight wickets in an Australian domestic limited overs match.
Chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns said Tait deserved a place ahead of the more experienced Glenn McGrath.
"We selected him specifically as a like replacement for Brett Lee who was our quickest bowler," Hohns said.
The selection of Tait is an acknowledgement by Australia of a need to start looking to the future.
McGrath has only played one first-class game since returning from ankle surgery, but there were other experienced alternatives available in Andy Bichel and Nathan Bracken.
Hohns revealed that he had to convince Tait the call-up was genuine after ringing to give him the news.
"I think he thought I was pulling his leg to be honest.
"But he was over the moon, of course, as most young fellows are when they're called up to play for their country."
Tait has taken 30 wickets for South Australia in this season's first-class Pura Cup competition and last month was named the country's Young Cricketer of the Year.
