McGrath losing fitness race
Glenn McGrath
Glenn McGrath has failed to prove his fitness
Australia's premier fast bowler Glenn McGrath has run out of time to prove his fitness for next month's tour of Sri Lanka.

Persistent ankle problems have kept him out of the New South Wales side for Sunday's one-day match against South Australia.

He also looks set to miss Tuesday's four-day Pura Cup match.

McGrath will have played no cricket this season when selectors finalise the Test squad on 20 February.

Jason Gillespie and Brett Lee are now set to spearhead the Aussie attack, with Michael Kasprowicz, Brad Williams and either Nathan Bracken or Andy Bichel as the other pacemen.

NSW will name its side on Monday, but a team spokesman said on Thursday McGrath would not be considered for a four-day match without having played either a club match or a one-day match.

McGrath has not played a Test for Australia since last July's second Test against Bangladesh in Cairns.

Australian chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns this week admitted McGrath might be too ambitious in aiming to return in the Sri Lanka series.
