The new head of Pakistan cricket has refused to sanction the squad for the Asia Under-17 tournament in India amid fresh allegations of nepotism. Shaharyar Khan, who became president of the Pakistan Cricket Board last month, says his call for an "emphasis on merit and transparency" has not been met.
A 14-man squad was announced on Friday including some relatives of selectors and district cricket officials.
The list of names will now be reviewed before the event starts on 13 January.
"While I appreciate that family influence is a major factor in developing young talent and that sons and nephews of established cricketing families should not be penalised, transparency demands that such filial connection shall be declared in advance.
"Accordingly, I am ordering an immediate suspension of the selected team pending receipt of declarations of interest and an immediate review of affected players by the chief executive," said Khan.
"The PCB is in the process of drawing up policy guidelines on issues of transparency and merit and that will be finalized after the two seminars in Lahore and Karachi later this month."
Chief selector Aamir Sohail, a former Test opening batsman, said the under-17 squad had been picked on merit following two trial matches in Lahore on 1-2 January.
"We have maintained consistency in team selection and the majority of the players have previously represented the country in under-15 or under-19 tournaments," he said.
"The selectors are delighted with the talent we have seen in these trials.
"I can assure all the cricketers who failed to get into the team that if they continue their hard work, they will definitely get a chance to show their potential in the future."
Questions about selection criteria were first raised last year when Junaid Zia, the son of Khan's predecessor, played one-day internationals for the national side.
