Australia 556 v India 180-4 India were left reeling in the second Test against Australia after losing Sachin Tendulkar and skipper Sourav Ganguly. India ended day two on 180-4 - still a mammoth 376 runs behind Australia's 556 in Adelaide.
Ricky Ponting top-scored for Australia, hitting a huge 242 and Anil Kumble was the pick of the India bowlers, taking 5-154.
India were 85-4 but VVS Laxman (55) and Rahul Dravid (43) steadied the ship.
They had put on an unbeaten fifth-wicket stand of 95 when play ended for the day.
India lost the key wickets of Tendulkar and Ganguly within 10 minutes of each other.
Tendulkar made just one run as he drove an Andy Bichel delivery to wicket-keeper Adam Gilchrist.
Ganguly (2) was run out when he attempted a second run off Jason Gillespie that was never on.
Bichel ended the day with figures of 3-55 after claiming the wickets of Akash Chopra and Virender Sehwag before the prized wicket of Tendulkar.
He had Chopra caught and bowled for 27 before Sehwag handed an easy catch to Matthew Hayden for 47.
Earlier Ponting raced to his career-best total off just 353 balls.
The Tasmanian's knock broke Kim Hughes' record of 213 for the highest score against India at Adelaide Oval.
Ponting then eclipsed team-mate Justin Langer's record of 223 for the highest score by an Australian against India.
