Bucknor defends reputation
Jason Gillespie dismisses Sachin Tendulkar
I was surprised because I appealed for so long and didn't get a response so I assumed it was going to be given not out
Jason Gillespie
Steve Bucknor has shrugged off criticism of his umpiring during the drawn first Test between Australia and India in Brisbane.

He controversially upheld an lbw appeal against Sachin Tendulkar during India's first innings and other decisions were also queried after the match.

But the West Indian, who has stood in a record 83 Tests, said he was "pretty comfortable" with his performance.

"Everyone makes mistakes, including myself," he added.

Bucknor is renowned for not rushing decisions, often waiting several seconds before raising the finger.

"I give myself enough time to think about my decision, to replay just about everything about that delivery, and by so doing I should in the end be able to make that decision.

"It's not because my brain is working slowly," he explained.

TV replays suggested the ball which led to Tendulkar's downfall would have passed over the top of the stumps.

Writing in The Australian newspaper, journalist Mike Coward said: "Thankfully, Steve Bucknor is Jamaican.

"If he was an Australian citizen, one hell of a diplomatic row would be under way following his astonishing leg before verdict against Sachin Tendulkar."

Former Indian all-rounder Ravi Shastri said the poor decision continued a trend of unfortunate dismissals established on India's last tour four years ago.

"He got two or three rough decisions in five innings and still averaged over 50 in that series," he added.

Bucknor next assignment is the third Test between Sri Lanka and England in Colombo.

He will then return return to Australia for the fourth Test in Sydney on 2 January, home captain Steve Waugh's final match before retiring from international cricket.
