Pakistan have dropped experienced wicket-keepers Moin Khan and Rashid Latif for this month's one-day home series against New Zealand.
The first of five matches takes place at Faisalabad on 22 November.
Khan played in the two Test matches against South Africa last month after Latif ruled himself out.
But selectors ignored both stumpers for the series against the Kiwis, naming 21-year-old Kamran Akmal in the 22-man squad of probables.
The tour will be New Zealand's first in Pakistan since they aborted a trip in July last year following a suicide bomb attack outside the team hotel in Karachi.
The Black Caps insisted they would only return to the country if Karachi was not included in the itinerary. As a result, the tour will be restricted to Faisalabad, Rawalpindi and Lahore.
Akmal has played 12 one-day internationals. He has taken eight catches and scored 167 runs at an average of 27.83.
He played in all five one-dayers against Bangladesh in September after Latif was banned for five games for claiming a false catch during the third Test match in Multan.
In July this year, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) reprimanded Latif on writing a letter to the International Cricket Council revealing match-fixing was still going on.
Latif recently resigned as captain of the side, and the 34-year-old's omission for the New Zealand series casts serious doubts over his international future.
"The decision to include just one wicket-keeper is a move into the future as far as one-day cricket is concerned," chief selector Aamir Sohail said.
The selectors have also recalled opener Salim Elahi as cover for injured Taufeeq Umar.
"We have recalled Elahi as a cover for Taufeeq," Sohail added.
"We understand that Taufeeq has a slight niggle in his knees and therefore, we don't want to risk him because of the more important assignments ahead."
