McMillan is looking to re-establish himself
New Zealand have recalled all-rounder Craig McMillan for the forthcoming Test series in India.

McMillan has not played Test cricket since December last year, but has been given another chance because Chris Cairns will miss the Tests because his partner is due to have a baby.

Cairns will, however, be available for the triangular one-day series, also involving Australia.

"Craig is very keen to re-establish himself in the team as a senior player and to contribute again as he has in the past," said chairman of selectors Sir Richard Hadlee.

"His experience will be vital in India and the opportunity is now there for him to perform and reclaim his place long-term."

Batsman Nathan Astle has been included in both squads after recovering from a knee injury, but they must manage without paceman Shane Bond, who is still recuperating from a stress fracture in his back.

The selectors have named two uncapped players in the Test squad - seam bowler Michael Mason and batsman Richard Jones.

Mason will attend the Dennis Lillee bowling clinic at Chennai ahead of the tour, in order to familiarise himself with sub-continent conditions.

"He has the ability to bowl long spells of consistent line and length, which will be useful on pitches that may not offer a lot of assistance," said Hadlee.

All-rounder Andre Adams has, meanwhile, been left out of the one-day squad after struggling for form in Sri Lanka earlier this year.

His place goes to Paul Hitchcock, who has taken 10 wickets in eight one-day appearances so far.

Ashley Ross will coach New Zealand on tour, prior to John Bracewell taking up the job on a full-time basis later in the year.

Test squad: Stephen Fleming (captain), Nathan Astle, Ian Butler, Robbie Hart, Richard Jones, Michael Mason, Craig McMillan, Jacob Oram, Mark Richardson, Scott Styris, Daryl Tuffey, Daniel Vettori, Lou Vincent, Paul Wiseman.

One-day squad: Fleming (captain), Astle, Butler, Chris Cairns, Chris Harris, Paul Hitchcock, Brendon McCullum, McMillan, Kyle Mills, Oram, Styris, Tuffey, Vettori, Vincent.
