Lewis is previous president of the MCC |
Former England captain Tony Lewis will succeed another former skipper, Ted Dexter, as the chairman of the MCC's Cricket Committee on Wednesday. Responsibilities include the Laws of Cricket and the playing programme of the Lord's-based club.
During his five-year spell as chairman, Dexter played a key role in launching the Spirit of Cricket initiative.
He was also responsible for enabling women cricketers to play an increasingly active role in the MCC.
"On top of his achievements as a batsman, Ted has been an outstanding chairman of the MCC's Cricket Committee," said incoming MCC president, Charles Fry.
Lewis, who was awarded a CBE in 2002, has previously served as MCC president, overseeing the hosting of the Cricket World Cup and the admission of women to the exclusive club.
He was the first Glamorgan player to skipper England, taking the reins on the 1972-73 tour to India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka after Ray Illingworth and Mike Smith withdrew.
And he joined an elite group of players to lead his side to victory on his Test debut.
Lewis led Glamorgan to their first ever County Championship title, guiding them through an unbeaten season in 1969.
A double blue at Cambridge, Lewis went on to play club rugby for Neath, Pontypool and Gloucester, before a knee injury forced him to concentrate on his cricket career.
