Griffith nets Windies post

Barbadian Teddy Griffith has been elected as the new president of the West Indies Cricket Board.

Griffith beat the only other candidate, former vice-president Clarvis Joseph, by nine votes to four in a meeting of the WICB in Antigua.

Retired banker Griffith played for Barbados and Jamaica and was chairman of the WICB marketing committee.

He replaces former West Indies fast bowler Wes Hall, who stood down through ill health.

Guyana bookmaker Chetram Singh had been set to take the job but withdrew in July after being told he could not attend International Cricket Council meetings.

Griffith will now play a key role in planning for the 2007 Cricket World Cup, which will be staged in the Caribbean.

Countries have until 31 January 2004 to submit their applications to host matches.

Beaten candidate Joseph formerly served as the board's vice-president until he resigned two years ago along with then-president Pat Rousseau after the directors overturned their decision to dismiss team manager Ricky Skerritt.
