Lancashire drop their heads
County Championship Division One, Trent Bridge, day two (stumps): Nottinghamshire 376-9 dec & 16-1 v Lancashire 219

Lancashire were put to the sword at Trent Bridge on the day their slender title hopes bit the dust.

Greg Smith returned 5-61 as the visitors were dismissed 157 runs in arrears, though skipper Jason Gallian chose not to enforce the follow-on.

Smith decimated the top-order, taking the first five wickets to fall to reduce Lancashire to 147-5.

Stuart Law, one of the seamer's victims, scored 51 but only Kyle Hogg offered support with a brisk 46.

Stuart MacGill and Paul Franks finished off the tail, claiming two wickets each.

There was time for Glen Chapple to remove Gallian cheaply before stumps, but with a 173-run lead the relegated hosts will be looking for a winning end to their disappointing season.
