Responsibility shifts from Hadlee to Bracewell |
New Zealand great Sir Richard Hadlee has been moved sideways in a reshuffle of the Black Caps' selection panel with new coach John Bracewell gaining a right of veto over teams. Former all-rounder Hadlee, chairman of selectors for the last three years, has been made selection manager in a move that makes the coach more responsible for results.
Bracewell, a Test-playing contemporary of Hadlee who was named last month to replace Denis Aberhart, has hinted strongly he is not prepared to be a bystander in selection debates.
The former off-spinner will not take up the post until 1 November as he finishes his contract with English county side Gloucestershire.
But he will be consulted on the make-up of the squad to tour India in September, while stand-in coach Ashley Ross takes his place on the selection panel. The remaining two members of the panel have yet to be appointed, although current incumbents Ross Dykes and Brian McKechnie are known to have reapplied for their positions.
Hadlee, who took 431 wickets and scored more than 3,000 runs in 86 Tests, insisted his role had not changed.
He has been know to use his casting vote only once during his time as chairman.
"The role of chairman has simply been discontinued," he explained.
"The role is now that of selection manager and I will be operating as I have in the past."
