Tour match, Taunton, day two: South Africa 326-4 dec & 126-2 (at close); Somerset 245-7 dec Boeta Dippenaar takes evasive action as Carl Gazzard drives |
Fast bowler Monde Zondeki marked his first appearance in England with figures of
5-64 at Taunton. Although expensive in his 11-over spell - the first two bowled before lunch - his performance was just what the tour selectors were looking for ahead of the Test series against England.
He was well supported by left-armer Charl Willoughby, who was a model of accuracy in taking 2-38.
South Africa endured a frustrating morning with the start of play delayed for two hours because of rain.
The Somerset openers were in aggressive mood when they finally resumed on 38-0 and had rtaken the total to 100 when Willoughby trapped Matthew Wood lbw for 55.
Bryant followed soon after lunch for 39 as Zondeki perced his defences and Parsons managed only a single before giving a catch to Herschelle Gibbs.
Ian Blackwell hit four boundaries in reaching 19 off 12 balls, but then became Zondeki's third victim when he was caught by Willoughby.
Carl Gazzard (27) and Aaron Laraman put on 50 for the sixth wicket, but were separated when Zondeki found the edge of Gazzard's bat and Thami Tsolekile accepted the catch.
Wes Durston was next to go for eight, prompting home skipper Michael Burns, who had earlier made 35, to declare 81 in arrears, with Laraman left on 41 not out.
South Africa had extended their advantage beyond 200 at the close, but there was still no relief for struggling opener Herschelle Gibbs, who was caught behind for 17 off Stefan Jones.
Gary Kirsten made 42 in almost two hours at the creasde, but the best innings came from Boeta Dippenaar, who found the boundary nine times in reaching 52 not out.
