Hussain stunned the cricketing world by resigning the captaincy after England were outplayed in the first Test against South Africa at Edgbaston.
He had set his sights on becoming England's most successful skipper and went into the series with 17 Test wins to his credit, just three fewer than Peter May's record.
His close working relationship with coach Duncan Fletcher had helped revive the side's fortunes in recent years, although two series against Australia ended in heavy defeats.
Hussain has a good Test record against South Africa and provided he keeps his place in the side he could yet pass 5,000 Test runs during the summer, making him only the 15th England batsman to reach that milestone.
