There is a buoyant mood in West Indies cricket at present |
The man set to replace Wes Hall at the head of West Indies cricket will not be able to hold office on the International Cricket Council.
Chetram Singh, the current president of Guyana Cricket Board, is a bookmaker.
An ICC spokesman confirmed the world cricket governing body's code of ethics says no director "shall be engaged or actively involved in, directly or indirectly, any conduct analogous to... gambling or any other form of financial speculation."
However the WICB would still be free to place qualified representatives on the ICC's directorate.
Singh, 53, is the only candidate to succeed Hall as president of the West Indies Cricket Board when the WICB holds its meeting this weekend.
Singh said officials would consider his eligibility to attend ICC meetings, among other matters, at a one-day meeting in Barbados on Thursday.
He said: "It does not mean that the president has to attend all meetings.
"He can deputise anyone. I can always send a representative."
Singh is set to take over from Wes Hall |
Singh's operation is legally registered in Guyana and takes bets only on horse and dog racing, mainly in Britain and Ireland.
It has not been a factor in his repeated elections as head of the Guyana board and to a seat on the WICB over the past 11 years.
Singh emerged as the only candidate when the other nominee, former Trinidad and Tobago and West Indies all-rounder and team manager Willie Rodriguez, withdrew his nomination Monday.
