Whatmore has a good coaching pedigree |
Attempts to reverse Bangladesh's poor cricketing fortunes are to be made a priority by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The ICC wants a high profile under-19 coach to be appointed and wants to assist and monitor the progress of improvement plans which have been put in place.
Bangladesh were given full Test status in 2000 but have never won a Test match in the 19 they have played so far.
They have won only one one-day international, against Pakistan in the 1996 World Cup, and exited this year's tournament without a victory, even against so-called lesser opposition.
Andrew Eade, the ICC's global development manager, was in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka for a two-day visit.
He said: "I honestly tried to point out specific areas where the ICC could render support to make Bangladesh more competitive as quickly as possible.
"The ICC wants to bring about significant changes in terms of result-oriented progress in Bangladesh's cricket within a short span of time.
"We also want to help build a national training centre with modern facilities and to restart specialised training programmes and to lobby the Asian Cricket Council to fund development activities in Bangladesh."
Bangladesh have appointed a new coach, Dav Whatmore, who is famous for guiding Sri Lanka to the 1996 World Cup.
He takes over next month and has said he is confident he can turn around Bangladesh's cricketing fortunes - but has warned fans not to expect a miracle.
