One of England's inaugural Academy squad members under Rod Marsh's tutelage, Key has lots of potential but has yet to unlock it at international level.
He admitted the Academy taught him a lesson in how hard it was to succeed at the highest level.
Key has got a solid county pedigree, averaging 33.59 in his four seasons with Kent.
He made his Test debut against India at Trent Bridge last summer when England opener Marcus Trescothick was ruled out with a fractured thumb and made an inauspicious 17.
England have persisted with the youngster and over the winter he played - and struggled - in the Ashes.
However he has been selected again, at the expense of the unlucky John Crawley, and the selectors will be hoping Key will start to repay their faith and bump up his current Test average of 20.18.
