Tour match, Brisbane, day one of three (stumps): Bangladesh 86-3 v Queensland Academy Invitation XII 201 Baisya dismissed both opening batsmen |
Tapash Baisya was the pick of the Bangladesh attack as they made an encouraging start to their Australian tour against a Queensland Academy invitational side. The pace bowler reduced the home side to 10-3 in his opening burst and finished with figures of 3-33 as the hosts were bowled out for 201 in just 60.4 overs.
Bangladesh were held up by a fourth wicket stand of 100 between Lee Carseldine and James Hopes, which came to an end when the latter was caught behind off Anwar Hossain for 53.
Carseldine struck a six and 15 fours in an innings lasting almost three hours but Bangladesh skipper Khaled Mahmud denied him a century by having him caught by Baisya for 92.
Chris Hartley (20) was the only other batsman to reach double figures for the Invitation team, but they were soon among the wickets when Bangladesh began their reply.
Javed Omar was first to go, caught off Hopes after failing to manage even a single during 48 minutes at the crease.
Opening partner Hannan Sarkar followed in the next over, bowled by Steve Magoffin for 19, and Habibul Bashar went for 20 before the close.
Mohammad Ashraful, the youngest batsman to score a Test century, demonstrated his potential with two sixes and four boundaries in reaching 33 not out off 52 balls.
Bangladesh coach Dav Whatmore was impressed by the performance against a side captained by Australia spinner Nathan Hauritz.
"It was a good team effort you have to think - we're playing against some reasonable players," Whatmore said.
"It was encouraging ... but tomorrow's another day so we'll have to knuckle down."
