Can Vaughan turn England's one-day fortunes around?

Right-arm off-spin bowler

History tells us the most successful international captains are batsmen and ones that are not afraid to dig deep when the time comes.

England's newly appointed one-day captain Michael Vaughan certainly has the right pedigree for the job.

The right-handed Yorkshire player is rated as the best batsman in the world after his 1,481 runs made him last year's leading run scorer.

Vaughan also stood tall against Australia's daunting pace attack in the winter Ashes tour.

The home side may have romped to the series 4-1 but the 28-year-old produced three century knocks of 183, 145 and 177 to be named man-of-the-series.

Standing upright at the crease and playing straight and true, his style is perfectly suited to Test cricket.

But Vaughan has made a slow start in the shorter version of the game since making his debut in 2001 against Sri Lanka.

Having played in 26 matches his average stands at 23.50 - that is almost exactly half his Test average of 50.93 from 28 matches.

After the fireworks Down Under, Vaughan - and England's - World Cup fell flat in South Africa.

The Manchester-born player started well scoring half-centuries against Holland and Pakistan before falling for 2 against India and making 20 before Australia's Andy Bichel struck.

But after an injury-plagued start to international cricket Vaughan's level-headedness, combined with his flair at the crease, has seen him emerge as one of England's most reliable player.

He is well respected amongst England's young one-day squad and if he settles on coming in at number three he will be ideally placed to lead his team both on and off the field.

Vaughan also has another string to his bow which will come in handy during the tense one-day encounters.

He is a useful off-spinner with an average of 30.25 and he is not to be underestimated as last summer he claimed the wicket of arch run-rival Sachin Tendulkar at Trent Bridge.
