Vaughan primed for one-day captaincy
Michael Vaughan
Vaughan has 26 one-day caps for England

Michael Vaughan says it would be "fantastic" if he were to be named England's next one-day captain.

Vaughan, revealed this week as one of Wisden's five cricketers of the year, is expected to be confirmed as Nasser Hussain's successor next Tuesday.

According to newspaper reports, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) will formally offer the job to Vaughan in the next few days before making the appointment public.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Vaughan insisted he did not know if he would be handed the job.

"I don't know yet but if it comes it would be fantastic," he said.

"You have to challenge yourself in life and this is certainly a challenge.

"If people in the right places believe I'm the right person to be the next captain then I'll give it a right good go."

England will participate in a three-match series against Pakistan in June, followed by the NatWest Series with South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Vaughan's first task as captain would be to help select the players who will replace Nick Knight, Andy Caddick, Alec Stewart and Hussain in the one-day team.

All four players retired from the one-day game after England's first-round exit from the World Cup, while Craig White and Paul Collingwood are injured.

"We performed reasonably well in the World Cup and there were some good younger players so there's something to build on," Vaughan added.

The Yorkshire opening batsman warned he did not expect to repeat last year's form, which saw him score seven Test centuries.

"I don't know if the captaincy would be a burden but I'll enjoy it if I do get the job," he went on.
